The Two Sais

Shirdi Sai Baba

Shirdi Sai Baba was born on September 28, 1836 in the village of Pathri in Northern India. This mysterious fakir first made his appearance in Shirdi as a youth and remained there throughout his long life. He transformed the lives of those who met him, and is continuously doing so even after his samadhi in 1918 for those whose hearts are touched by his Love, and who pray and call him at any emergency in life for his blessings.
Baba stated that his mission is to "give blessings" without discrimination to all, and he proves it in myriad ways by healing the sick, saving lives, protecting the vulnerable, and, above all, by effecting the spiritual evolution of those who come to him as a last resort.
From the year 1917 onwards Shirdi Sai Baba began revealing to many close devotees that he would be re-incarnating in the Andhra region eight years after the passing of his physical frame - his samadhi. Sai Baba attained samadhi on Oct 15, 191

Sathya Sai Baba

Sri Sathya Sai Baba was born on November 23, 1926 in the village of Puttaparthi (as Sathya Narayana Raju) in Southern India. He has established his ashram there, which is known as Prasanthi Nilayam, or "The Abode of the Highest Peace". Millions of spiritual seekers visit the ashram each year to receive his divine blessings.

As a child Sri Sathya Sai Baba demonstrated the qualities of compassion, wisdom, desire to serve others, and great respect for elders. He also displayed remarkable miraculous powers and knowlege, and talent in drama, music and dance. He could quote and discuss the spiritual texts without ever having studied them.

The Divine Declaration

Came May 23rd, 1940 and with it a revelation. That morning Sathya was in a good mood, materialising flowers and sugar candy in plenty, and was distributing them to all those who came to him. Father Venkamma Raju heard about this but was neither pleased nor amused.

Suspecting trickery, he armed himself with a big stick, approached Sathya, and asked "Who are you? Are you God, Ghost or Devil?" The big moment had arrived and Sathya calmly replied:

"I am Sai"

The stick slowly slipped out of Venkamma Raju's hand, but he still remained puzzled. So he asked: "What are we to do with you?" and Sathya replied:

"Worship Me"

The Father's next question was "When?" came the answer:

"Every Thursday"

That was when the worhsip of Sathya Sai first commenced.

Came finally the day to stop all worldly ties and launch the mission He incarnated for. October 20, 1940 was that day. On that morning Sathya left for school as usual, but within minutes he was back home. Standing on the doorstep he flung aside the bag containing books and in ringing tones declared: "I am no longer your Sathya. I am Sai - I don't belong to you. I have my work, my devotees are calling me.I am going! I can no longer stay here."

Walking up to a neighbour's house, he sat on a rock in the middle of the garden there, while people flocked bringing flowers. And then most lovingly and compassionately Sri Sathya Sai Baba led the congregation in a Bhajan, that has now become very familiar - he sang:

"Manase Bhajare Guru Charanam
Dustara Bhava Sagara Tharanam"

Oh mind! Meditate on the lotus feet of the Lord! That alone will help you to sail across the turbulent sea called Life.

The Avatar hadfinally revealed himself. Physically Sai was still a 14 year old, yet such was his magnetism, and such was the faith of the devotees that flocked to him, that they had no reservation in accepting him as the divine incarnation.

""I have come to light the lamp of Love in your hearts, to see that it shines day by day with added lustre.""
